PROJECT:
觀 - PERCEPTION
I came to New York three years ago to start my new life and a new identity, that mean I had to become a full-time New Yorker. I was scared, New York to me has always been dark, crowded and full of sirens and freaky looking people. I was really homesick, but over time I felt safe, I felt like my energy is a part of the city; and I myself becomes someone who is freaky looking.
Why? I must discover this mist. Why does this city have this special but undesirable tone? Who is apart of this city? For the past three years I have been looking for the answer to this question.
I've found it. I understood. The making of this project have unfolded everything for me and hopefully for you too.
In this project, I aim to slow down the audience, force them to take a deeper look at my photos and the city. No one ever walks slowly in a busy city like New York, and because of that we will forever be wondering.
The dark tone across the series aims to represent the gritty image that many visualize, where they think of "New York City". And how it impairs our perception of the city as the audience has to struggle to perceive the finer details of the photo.
And the subject/s in every image is part of New York, they are together create the New York we know and love.
The images aim to present with a sense of history, heritage and direction, but more importantly it wraps around the subject, bleeding and brining something new to our perception.
